Richard Fuchs, violin

Richard Fuchs, Professor of Music, is recognized as an outstanding performer, teacher, conductor and clinician. As a member of the violin-piano team FUCHS DUO, he continues to perform recitals on university campuses around the nation and frequently performs at conventions such as M.T.N.A. and the Society of American Composers. In addition, Fuchs has actively performed in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea, and has taught master classes at institutions such as the American University Music School in Taipei, Taiwan, Keim Yung University in Daegu, Korea, and the Music School at Changwon National University in Manson, Korea. He has also been invited to perform at the Contemporary Music Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As soloist, Fuchs performs as guest artist with symphonies across theU.S.most recently performing the Brahms Double Concerto with the Rapid City Symphony Orchestra inSouth Dakota. Featured for the U.S. premiere performance of the Terzian Violin Concerto, Fuchs recorded the work on the Constantino label that is distributed throughout the U.S. and South America. Additionally, Fuchs actively performs as a member of the University of Northern Colorado Piano Quartet, as well as the FUCHS/FITTZ PIANO TRIO. As a noted clinician and conductor, Fuchs has appeared with All-State Orchestras in eight states. As a noted teacher, Fuchs specializes in the “use of natural body motions and body rhythm” which was cultivated through his studies with famed violin pedagogue, Paul Rolland, as well as Franco Gulli, Edward Melkus, and Andre Granat. Fuchs has received five awards as outstanding teacher from Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and has served as President of the Arkansas and Colorado Chapters of the American String Teachers Association.

Dr. Juliet White-Smith, viola

Violist Juliet White-Smith is an active soloist and chamber musician. She has performed throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East. She has appeared at three International Viola Congresses, in Montreal, Tempe, Arizona and most recently in South Africa. Her chamber music collaborations have brought her onstage with such luminaries as violinists Andres Cardenes and Benny Kim, and pianist Gilbert Kalish. She has been a guest artist at various summer music festivals including Strings in the Mountains and Fontana Festival in Michigan.

A devoted educator with a history of printed contributions in American String Teacher and Journal of the American Viola Society, Dr. White-Smith has presented master classes at the Eastman School of Music and was a featured presenter at the ASTA National Conference in 2007. She has served as string juror for various competitions including the William Primrose International Viola Competition and has taught at the Interlochen Arts Camp and Bravo! Summer Institute for Strings and Piano at the University of Minnesota.

A prominent advocate of the viola, Dr. White-Smith is currently President of the American Viola Society. Her debut CD recording of works by contemporary American composers George Walker, Michael Colgrass and Maurice Gardner was released in May 2009 on the Centaur Records label.

Dr. White-Smith earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music.

Dr. Gal Faganel, Cello

Cellist Gal Faganel has been praised in the press for his captivatingly beautiful sound (RTV Slovenia) and for his deep and stirring interpretation of music (Večer). He is frequently heard as a soloist and in chamber music recitals throughout North America and Europe. Until 2010 he served as the acting principal cellist of the Phoenix Symphony.

Growing up in a musical family in Slovenia he continued his studies in Croatia and then at the University of Southern California with Eleonore Schoenfeld, culminating with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. His other mentors include Peter Marsh, Nathaniel Rosen, Daniel Rothmuller and Dobrila Berković-Magdlenić. He has won many international competitions and received numerous awards, including the International Cello Competition “Antonio Janigro” in Croatia and the Slovenian National Competition as a soloist and with piano trio. He also has a number of radio and CD recordings to his credit. Since 2006 he has been dedicated to researching, performing, and recording music by Slovenian composers.

Dr. Faganel greatly enjoys teaching cello and coaching chamber music. Recently he has been appointed assistant professor at the University of Northern Colorado. He previously taught at Scottsdale Community College and at the University of Southern California. He also regularly conducts master classes and teaches at summer music programs in the United States and in Europe. Innovative teaching approaches utilizing video conferencing technology allow Gal to be accessible to students worldwide.

James Vaughn, Double Bass

James Vaughn holds the Principal Double Bass chair with the Greeley Philharmonic and Colorado Ballet Orchestras. He has also held principal positions with Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra, Opera Colorado, Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Breckenridge Music Festival, Mercury Ensemble, and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the western United States. He collaborates frequently with UNC faculty in chamber music performances and has been a member of the faculty jazz combo. He also maintains a busy performance schedule throughout theRockyMountainregion with a diversity of performing arts organizations and national touring Broadway productions at theDenverCenterfor the Performing Arts. Other performing credits include five seasons as a member of the Colorado Springs Symphony and ongoing engagements with the Colorado Symphony and other regional orchestras.
